FAQ

  • Are oil seed sunflowers a waste?
  • Oil seed sunflowers were developed in Russia and can grow in most climates. When pressing seeds into oils, there is virtually no waste. Bevin shares that they pressed mainly hemp seeds and would feed the hemp cake (what’s left over after pressing the oil) to their pigs.
  • What seeds can be pressed into oil at home?
  • There are so many nuts and seeds that can be pressed into oils at home: Hemp Seed – Hemp seeds are 35-40% oil. Hemp seeds are convenient because you can press them in the shell. Flax Seed – A very nutritious seed for pressing into an oil. You don't need to shell them before pressing. Sunflower Seed – Sunflower seeds are 30-35% oil.
  • Should you grow and press your own seed and nut oils?
  • If you want to have a sustainable oil source (that’s not from animal fats), then consider growing and pressing your own seed and nut oils at home. In this post, my guest Bevin Cohen and I are breaking down everything you need to know about pressing your own seed and nut oils.
  • How much Oil can you get from sunflower seeds?
  • Sunflower Seed – 30-35% oil within the seed. You can get approximately one gallon of oil from ten pounds of seeds. An acre of sunflowers can produce upwards of 200 gallons of sunflower oil, which means that about a 400-foot row of sunflowers can produce a few gallons of oil. Enough for most average-sized families for a year.
  • Can you plant seeds from fresh pressed sunflower oil?
  • Right on. But I tell you, once you taste that fresh pressed sunflower oil, you're going to start finding places to plant some seeds for sure. Absolutely. Absolutely.
  • How did Bevin get started pressing seed oils?
  • Bevin got started pressing seed oils over ten years ago as a way to be able to produce staple foods for his family. Pressing oils isn't something new. Olive oil was mentioned in the bible, mustard seeds have been pressed in India for over 4,000 years, and flaxseeds have been pressed in Syria, tracing back over 5,000 years.
