FAQ

  • Can you use shea butter as a soap base?
  • Shea butter works great as a soap base due to its natural moisturizing and anti-inflammatory properties. This cold-process shea butter soap recipe will make several soap bars ready to use in as little as five weeks. It’s well worth the wait! Something in me always looks at soap and thinks, “Is this one actually going to moisturize my skin?”
  • Is shea butter good for sensitive skin?
  • Shea butter – is highly moisturizing, with anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s great to use on sensitive skin and, as a result, can be found as an ingredient in many of my cold process soap bar recipes and herbal soap recipes.
  • Which oil is best for soap?
  • Hard oils are solid at room temperature. This includes coconut oil, palm oil, cocoa butter, and shea butter. They add firming properties to soap, and certain ones create nice fluffy lather. Soft oils are liquid at room temperature. Olive oil, avocado oil, and sweet almond oil are a few examples. They add moisture and a silky feeling to soap.
  • Is hot process soap better than cold process soap?
  • Hot process soap is more rustic in it’s appearance and more difficult to do fancy swirls and get creative with color. However, hot process soap can be used as soon as it hardens whereas cold process soap must cure for 4-6 weeks. One is not better than the other, it is just a matter of preference.
  • How do you make coconut oil ice cream with shea butter?
  • Melt the shea butter and fractionated coconut oil in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. You can also use a double boiler. However, I’ve found it works just as well using a saucepan while stirring frequently. Once the shea butter and coconut oil are melted, you'll want to let it cool down to about 100°F.
